BLOG #4 – March 2024

Do your managers and leaders trust and inspire you?

Times have changed and the “Command and Control” leadership ethic must move towards a “Trust & Inspire” approach. The fundamental difference is moving from extrinsic motivation to intrinsic motivation.

I marked-up many insightful pages in this book: “Trust & Inspire”, Stephen M. R. Covey © 2022. Simon & Schuster. Choosing my top takeaways is not easy:

– To be trusted is the most inspiring form of motivation as it brings out the best in us. When we feel understood by someone we are trusting and we may even feel inspired by them. One-on-one meetings is mentioned confirming my conviction that facetime with team members is critical to success. Through mutually agreed expectations, trust is created, and results are achieved.

– There is a quoted Cherokee birth blessing “may you live long enough to know why you were born”. Finding your “why” is again essential to be an authentic trusting and inspiring person. Even if you are not charismatic, the art of inspiring others can be learned.

– Not being able to trust is a lonely existence, it is stressful, tiring and not a fun way of going about things. Nothing grows people better than extending trust. All people want to apply themselves, their talents and skills, to meaningfully contribute and have a sense of purpose. This is the remit of a modern leader – unleash the greatness in everyone.
